May 2019 Monthly Meeting

When Sam Landes was 5 years old, his mother began taking him along to forage for morel mushrooms, sparking a lifelong interest in the wonders of wild fungi. On Monday, May 20, Sam will share his expertise in a presentation called “The Fascinating World of Fungi”.  If you’re curious why fungi deserves such attention, then this evening will provide an eye-opening treat. For instance, there are over 70 species of mushrooms that glow in the dark!  Ancient Egyptians reportedly believed the fungi were the plant of immortality. That’s not hard to agree with when you learn that the Honey Mushroom (Armillaria ostoyae) is the world’s largest known organism, estimated to be 2,400 years old but possibly as ancient as 8,650 years.  GCMGA meets on the third Monday of each month at The Bethesda Senior Center, 225 Bethesda Church Road, Lawrenceville, GA 30044. Everyone is welcome to bring a covered dish to share for a potluck dinner at 6:30pm or just arrive in time for the program which begins promptly at 7pm.
